Lab automation technologies can transform lab work. Before we can reap those benefits we have to transform the way people approach lab automation. That is what this organization is about: helping people learn how to plan, implement, evaluate and use the products & technologies available to them.
Lab automation has become an important factor in the execution of laboratory work.
But it isn’t being done well, and those graduating from school are not being educated in the tools, techniques and how to use them effectively.
We want to change that and improve people’s ability to use these technologies in lab/scientific work.
That means improving:
- The planning, and ability to implement systems
- People’s ability to work with the technology, and,
- The products themselves by developing an architecture for integration.
The result will be:
- Better educated and productive scientists and technicians, who can devote their efforts toward innovation and discovery; and
- Laboratories that maximize the ability to produce and use knowledge, information and data in pursuit of their goals.
We will pursue these goals by:
- Forming a community to turn lab automation from a collection of techniques and tools into a discipline of standards, practices and a body of knowledge
- Developing educational programs for those new to the field as well as those who want to improve their capabilities; and
- Devising methodologies and underlying technology to improve people’s ability to use lab automation systems.
The benefit of this work is the development of people’s ability to take full advantage of the tools at their disposal. They will be able to plan and devise systems to accomplish tasks, understand the effective application of products, develop and/or adapt procedures for automation, and be recognized as practitioners of a formal discipline.
